Electronic Entropy, Shell Structure, and Size-Evolutionary Patterns of Metal Clusters

چکیده
We show that electronic-entropy effects in the size-evolutionary patterns of relatively small (as small as 20 atoms), simple-metal clusters already become prominent at moderate temperatures. Detailed agreement between our finite-temperature–shell-correction-method calculations and experimental results is obtained for certain temperatures. This agreement includes a size-dependent smearing out of fine-structure features, accompanied by a measurable reduction of the heights of the steps marking major-shell and subshell closings, thus allowing for a quantitative analysis of cluster temperatures. Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Alkali Metal Cluster Anions
ABSTRACf. We present the photoelectron (photodetacment) spectra of K2:-19 recorded using 2.540 eV photons. These spectra are highly structured, providing a wealth of information about the electronic structure of alkali metal clusters, including adiabatic electron affinities and electronic spliuings for each size. Spectral assignments have been made with guidance from theory. For the smaller clu...
متن کاملShell structure and shapes of fermion microsystems: A comparative study of He and Na clusters
A semiempirical shell-correction method including ellipsoidal deformations is used to determine binding energies of open-shell, unpolarized HeN clusters. Shell effects, shapes, and other ground-state properties ~like the chemical potential! are determined. HeN clusters are found to be substantially less deformed due to their relatively high surface energy as compared to that of alkali-metal clu...
متن کاملX-ray spectroscopy reveals high symmetry and electronic shell structure of transition-metal-doped silicon clusters
Size-selected cationic transition-metal-doped silicon clusters have been studied with x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the transition-metal L2,3 edges to investigate the local electronic structure of the dopant atoms. For VSi16 + , the x-ray absorption spectrum is dominated by sharp transitions which directly reveal the formation of a highly symmetric silicon cage around the vanadium atom. In s...

We report the equilibrium geometries and the electronic structures of Nan clusters in the size range of n =55–62 using density-functional method. An analysis of the evolutionary trends in their ground state geometries reveals that Na58 has a spherical shape which is driven by the closed-shell nature of the electronic structure. This structure shows a significant large network connected by short...
متن کاملSize Evolution Study of the Electronic and Magnetic Properties of MgO Nanoclusters
Magnesium oxide nanoclusters have attracted much attention due to their potential applications to catalysis and novel optoelectronic materials. In the present study, we have studied the electronic and magnetic properties of the stoichiometric magnesium oxide nanoclusters (MgO)n for n = 2-20. Although the binding energy increases with the size of the cluster, it re...
